Foreign Trade

After graduating from Warsaw School of Economics and serving in the army, I began my career at the Metal Division of the Foreign Trade Enterprise “Universal” in Warsaw. In 1990 I was transferred to New Jersey to run the non-ferrous metals department at BSTC Group - Universal's US based company. After working there for three years, I applied for permanent residency in the US and subsequently left the BSTC Group/Universal. Together with a partner (also Polish and an SGH graduate),I started a company for imports and distribution of non-ferrous semi-finished products (Stebco, Inc.). At first, we exclusively supplied materials imported from Poland and our sales were limited to the US and Canada, but we gradually expanded our operations to other countries. In 2007, we acquired Marmetal Industries - a non-ferrous metal distribution company based in Pennsylvania. Nine years later, I bought out my partner and merged both companies (Stebco and Marmetal) under the name Marmetal Industries in Pennsylvania. (www.marmetal.com)

Marmetal now is one of the largest distributors of copper-nickel products in the US. The products we sell (mainly made of copper, aluminium, nickel and their alloys) are imported primarily from the European Union. Our largest suppliers are located in Germany and Poland. We also import materials from several other European countries and to a lesser extent from Asia. We sell primarily in the USA, Canada, South America and Europe in addition to other more exotic destinations such as Malaysia or South Africa. Our main markets are shipbuilding, defence, heat exchangers and power generation. We supply international companies such as General Dynamics, Northrop Grumman, Johnson Controls, Alfa Laval as well as most US Navy shipyards. Remontowa S.A. shipyard in Gdańsk is also one of our customers in Poland.

Recently we have opened sales offices in Canada and Poland. Marmetal is also a shareholder in several different ventures in the US and Europe. We currently employ approximately 30 people in Pennsylvania and generate $ 20 million in turnover. In 2021, we will be moving the company again, into a new building of our own with an area twice as large as the one we use today.

Our plans for the near future focus on the increase of our sales to $ 50 million within the next as well as opening a branch on the US West Coast and further expansion into the South American market.

My biggest success

My children. My son was born in Poland and came to the USA when he was a year old. He is completing his PhD in robotics at Carnegie Mellon University. My daughter was born in the US. She is a pre-medical student at Johns Hopkins University. They both speak Polish fluently.

My advice for SGH students

Above all - do not be afraid! Embrace taking risks.
