Quantitative Methods in Economics and Information Systems

I have always been keen on mathematics, since elementary school, but I did not want to pursue a career as a teacher after graduation. So I decided on economics: I hesitated between cross-disciplinary studies at the University of Warsaw (mathematics and economics) and the SGH Warsaw School of Economics (field of study: MIESI (Methods in Economics and Information Systems) - because it seemed the most related to mathematics). Eventually, I chose the SGH Warsaw School of Economics because of the rich language offer.

Interest in foreign languages is associated with my passion (or maybe the need?) to travel and change the environment (in my childhood I used to play a traveller, my best toys were suitcases and bags, which I would pack and take outside the house). At the age of 15 I went to high school in another city (Bielsko-Biała, 80 km from my hometown of RycerkaGórna) and I lived in a boarding school. At that time I already knew that I wanted to study in Warsaw, but I was also convinced that I would not live in Poland.

Finally, I finished my undergraduate studies in MIESI, specialization: econometrics. I did not stay at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics, after 3 years in one place it was the time to change the environment and achieve my next goal - a permanent relocation abroad. Due to good grades and solid knowledge of English, I had no problem getting into econometrics at the Erasmus School of Economics in Rotterdam. But choosing a place was pure coincidence: this field of study was recommended to me by a friend from SGH and I decided to take part in recruitment. Finally, at ESE I found myself with 4 other graduates of SGH.

In the Netherlands, it is very popular to write an MA thesis with a specific employer. Companies announce themselves at the university and organize special recruitment events. That is how I started my adventure with my current employer, a consulting company - as a Graduate Intern. After a six-month internship, I decided to stay in the company and in the Netherlands (I must admit that meeting my significant other also had a significant impact on this decision).

I am currently dealing with IT in insurance: we build complete systems for calculating insurance policies for our clients, from databases, actuarial calculations, to reporting. These are areas that I did not deal with during studies, which is why developing myself in this direction gives me a lot of satisfaction.

Since I do not come from a wealthy family (only my mother and my brother raised me), I started applying for scholarships from junior high school. My engagement in volunteering was extremely helpful. I was granted a scholarship by the Work of the New Millennium Foundation, thanks to which I was able to pay for my dormitory in high school. When I went to Warsaw to study, I became a scholarship holder of the Centre on the Thought of John Paul II, where I had been volunteering for 3 years.

Currently, I am not a volunteer, but this is just a temporary break. My passion is body building. Very slowly (and with caution, because in this sport it is easy to overexert yourself) I am preparing for bodybuilding competitions.

My biggest success

Achievement of financial independence very early; graduation abroad; having interesting and satisfying work.

My advice for SGH students
Learn foreign languages, take advantage of student exchange programmes, work for good grades (contrary to appearances, they matter!)
